Death Threat Allegation During Mediation Raises Safety Concerns in Varanasi

Varanasi, September 7, 2026

A matrimonial mediation proceeding at the Varanasi District Court has raised concerns over the safety of parties appearing for mediation after a participant alleged that he was threatened with serious harm during proceedings on Monday.

According to the participant, Abhishek Singh, he appeared at the mediation centre for a scheduled matrimonial matter. He alleged that the opposite party arrived with several people and that an altercation or confrontation followed.

Singh alleges that some of the accompanying persons threatened him with death and made statements claiming that they were lawyers and could take action against him without consequences. He says the incident left him concerned about his personal safety.

The matter has become particularly concerning for Singh because he has reportedly been asked to appear again at the mediation centre on September 8.

Editorial Note / Disclaimer:

The allegations have not been independently verified, and it is not being suggested that all persons accompanying the other party were involved in the alleged threats. The identities and roles of the individuals involved would need to be established by the appropriate authorities.

Singh says he intends to approach the police and the concerned mediation authorities, requesting that the alleged incident be formally recorded and that available CCTV footage and witness accounts be examined.

Safety concerns during mediation

Mediation is intended to provide a structured environment where parties can attempt to resolve disputes without prolonged litigation. However, allegations of intimidation or threats during such proceedings can raise legitimate concerns about the safety and voluntary participation of the parties involved.

Legal experts generally advise individuals who receive a credible threat to preserve evidence, document the incident, inform the appropriate authorities and avoid confrontation.

For Singh, the immediate concern is his scheduled appearance at the mediation centre the following day. He has sought appropriate safety measures so that he can participate in the proceedings without intimidation.

Authorities have yet to publicly establish the facts of the alleged incident. Any further action would depend on the complaint, evidence and inquiry by the competent authorities.
